Hi,
I was diagnosed a week ago after a big flare-up of rosacea - lots of pain, redness and broken capillaries, a few tiny blisters; no red spots of any kind (yet).
Was put on metrogel and doxycycline (100mg). Had reaction to metrogel straight away when I patch-tested; now I've been told to stop taking the doxy - was having problems swallowing, felt like there was something stuck in my gullet, despite following all the instructions (took it standing up, lots of water, etc.).
Need to go back to the GP to discuss alternatives - any suggestions? I presume I won't be able to tolerate any tetracycline antiobiotics now. But then I wasn't aware they were going to do anything for my symptoms anyway.
My GP seems to know very little about this, so I'd rather go in knowing what (if anything) I want! I did rather like the idea that I was doing something - but it was making me feel very unwell, so it's a relief to be told I'm not allowed any more!
Thanks,
Kristina |

Hey Kristina,
I'm sorry you had a reaction with Doxycline.
Me/my skin liked Minocyline better, Doxycline didn't do much for me. Make sure you take it with food, lots of water, and not before bed. You want to make sure it has enough time to make it down your digestive tract and won't cause esophageal irritation. My Derm. said take it atleast 2 or more hours before bed. I tend to get tightness in my throat also, but this method helps and also worked on my skin.
You could try Metro lotion or Finacea. I hear the Metro lotion is a bit more hydration than Metro gel. I personally use Finacea (morning only) and mix a little with my moisteriser. Just some suggestions to consider...

Try either 50 mg or Oracea (50 mg) doxycycline. If that still bothers you, try minocycline or tetracycline. (although both have been shown to be not quite as effective as doxy...) _________________ Subtype-1: Cheek and ear flushing

Sadly I don't think oracea is available here in the UK yet - typical!

I take 50 mg doxy. Just cut my 100 mg pills in half. Maybe that's an idea. Or take it every other day instead. _________________ Currently on Finacea and doxy (50 mg) |

You know, it never occurred to me to just cut a pill in half! But then obvious solutions rarely do; I'm not the world's most practical person!
Going back to the GP in a week or two so will discuss that possibility. At the moment, I have to say, it's just very nice not to feel sick constantly.
Thanks,
Kristina |
