Rosacea has seemed to destroy my life .. .i can't stand how ugly it has made me and mirrors are bringing me down so much. I have done my first IPL and I'm so impatient .. i am also on Finacea and Oracea but nothing is helping. How do you all have the strength to go on? I looked in the mirror today and thought I was going to throw up. I'm 21 years old and I look at all the young people around with me clear skin and I feel like I can barely wake up in the morning.. how do you do it?

I asked this in another thread, but you may have missed it. You had such a great deal with your IPL, where did you go for treatment?

To answer your question: self acceptance, positive reinforcement (whether it be self talk or being surrounded by people who love us for who we are, regardless of what we look like), and patience. It won't last forever, it does not define you, and you can work on the person you are or wish to be (character development) and let the superficial not matter so much.

Hi qscott86,

I know how tough rosacea can be. It can be overwhelming at times but you need to know that things will get better. Right now you are going through a bad patch and your skin will calm down. You need to be strong and know how much you have to look forward to. You are so young and have your whole life ahead of you. There are wonderful things in store for you that you can't even imagine. So you can't give up because there is too much to live for.

Listen to me when I tell you that beauty is truly from the inside. I know it sounds trite but it is the truth. Feel confident and content and people will perceive you to be so. It is all about the way you feel about yourself that people pick up on and then reflect back at you. You have much more to offer than clear skin. You are not defined by your rosacea and don't let yourself feel that you are. You are the boss, not your rosacea.

It takes time to get a handle on your rosacea. And you will have good days and bad days. On the good days you feel great. On the bad days just tell yourself you are not going to let rosacea take control of the way you feel about yourself and do the best you can to hold your head up high and say &*%* to your rosacea. And on days you can't shake it be extra kind to yourself and don't be so hard on yourself. You're allowed to take some time and feel sorry for yourself every now and then but then you have to shake it off and go on. There's too much to look forward to even if you don't realize it yet. Take my word for it. And you will find ways to control the rosacea symptoms and have more good days than bad. Hang in there!

All the best,
Melissa

Thank you both very much for the kind words.

I'm having IPL at Be Medispa in Lexington, Kentucky. It was actually rated one of the best medispas in the country. And yes, a doctor (MD) does the treatments.

to answer your question... how do you go on?

It's a good question.

Knowing there are improved treatments coming in the next few years keeps me going. Our current treatment options are very weak to say the least. (I should know...)

When you are in your twenties there appears to be nothing more important than how you look. I was obsessed with how bad I thought I looked. In the end antidepressants helped me to overcome this unhealthy obsession. Perhaps you may like to speak to your doctor about this, Remeron can be useful both as an antidepressant and also as antihistamine.

What I find amazing nowadays is that when I speak to my friends none of them can remember me having skin problems.

My best adivce regarding mirrors is to just avoid them at all costs. Nowadays I don't concentrate on looking good but rather concentrate on being an interesting person Very Happy .

That's a good point Sarah. I would much rather be around interesting people than bland good looking ones. It's much more fun. Also, as we age our looks do fade and everyone is put on more or less equal ground. So, if we have interesting and fun personalities that will always be ours that aging can't (hopefully, if we maintain our sense of humor) take away.

For me, it's much more an issue of pain (the burning and swelling) but of course everyone would rather be attractive as long as they can. You just need to have the right frame of mind and feel good. People will perceive you the way you perceive yourself usually. Have you ever noticed how someone who is fun, nice and friendly seems more attractive than someone who is not?

Best wishes,
Melissa

Re Ageing. I remember reading that, growing old is giving up on trying to be the person you want to be and settling on being the person you are.

Have to say, lying on the couch and breaking wind is far more appealing now than trying to be James Bond.

Here is the spa I go to: bemedispa DOT com (i can't post links for a stupid reason) The treatments are all done by a MD (Dr. Hester). I really like the place and the atmosphere is very relaxing. If you go to their website, and click 'See Dr. Hester's Interview' on the right, you can actually see clips from an actual IPL procedure (for those of you who want to see what it looks like). His office uses Lumenis ONE, btw. The prices are very reasonable at 300/treatment, plus they do buy 2 get one free specials a lot. The staff was great and offered my free samples of several things... very courteous .. they didn't even ask for payment until my procedure was done!

FYI I'm not trying to advertise for his office ... I have seen several others stating where they go.

Thanks, Melissa .. you're too kind ... the nicest person on this forum so far (though everyone has been nice).

I will have to say that although rosacea seems to rule my life, I have found some of the nicest people at this forum. I wish I could have IPL every week (though it's not realistic I know) ... I terrible want this redness to go away .. it's ruining my life.. and I'm tired of looking around at all the other teenagers with perfect skin Embarassed At least I don't feel so alone on here, but I will say I rarely see people with the kind of flushing i have.

You are most definitely not alone qscott86. We are all here for support and believe me everyone has something in life. So, even if it's not visible to other people everyone has their cross to bear so to speak. Your something just happens to be visible to others but you will find a way to control and manage your rosacea. You just started IPL so give it time. After you have a few more you should really begin to see improvement.
Hang in there!

Best wishes,
Melissa

BTW I don't know that my mother-in-law would agree with your very lovely sentiment that I am too kind LOL but thanks Very Happy

"How do you go on?"

I'm not sure that kind of talk benefits anyone...

I read the question as more of a 'hope do you cope?' kind of inquiry.
