Hi Guys,

I'm new here but have been reading for the last month and very glad to have found this forum. I just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on the following prescriptions. I have an appointment with my derm today.

I mainly have very oily skin, P&P's and red marks from P&P's (also blotchy skin when warm or in the evening) that never seem to go away. Most of the P&P's / red marks are on the cheeks. Also, my temples have perm redness, upper cheeks, chin and a little on forehead and nose. Sometimes just my nose/ears flush in the evening which looks horrible. The perm redness isn't too bad until I flush though. I have gotten about 5-6 V-beams done within the last 3 years and they have helped with the flushing and redness but its pricey.

I was wondering if anyone has tried both of these products? Will Oracea help with oily skin? Do both help with redness? I've used Finacea but it didn't seem to do much. I also just started with Zyrtec 10mg (which is Reactine in Canada).

Thank you all.

Rob

Hi -

Antibiotics work in killing bacteria, they won't help in regulating sebum or oil. Oracea is very low dose Doxycline, which is helpful (for some) for reducing inflammation and helps with P/P's. If you have stubborn and consistent P/P's or acne, you may be better off going on a regular course of antibiotics, like Minocycline, Doxycline, or Bactrim, etc. Depending if your allergic to any of these and/or if your Derm. has preferences. Topicals like Finacea or Clindamycin lotion can help prevent and clear acne and P/P, but if you have ultra sensitive skin, you may find them to harsh. I've tried both in the past and currently am using Finacea again (my skin is sensitive but can tolerate mild acids). Or, if you've done course(s) of antibiotics and your acne and P/P's return (like in my case my mild acne came back) you may wish to consider low dose Accutane. Accutane is effective for acne and P/P, reducing inflammation from skin conditions, and slightly to mildly effective in reducing Rosacea type redness.

A little about my course.... I just finished 8 months of low dose Accutane (see my log) It eliminated my oil, mild acne, and blackheads on my nose. Smoothed my skin. Lessened my Rosacea redness slightly. Side effects were mild for me, more like nuisances. I like the results, but like anything, I don't know how long they will last. Enjoying it for now. It's like Accutane gives skin a fresh start (clears it out) so topicals and treatments following Accutane can hopefully be more effective. Low dose Accutane is key for Rosacea, so make sure your Derm. has your interests in mind.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Yvette
