clarithromycin?

Has anyone been on/had any success with clarithromycin? My GP has suggested it as a possibility, as I had nasty side-effects with doxycycline. I told her about low-dose doxy but she didn't think I should try anything doxy-related again. I have redness, flushing, telangiectasia (rapidly increasing) and eye involvement, but no p&ps (yet).

Have had short courses of erythromycin for infections in the past with no problems, so that may be another option.

Thanks,
Kristina

Hi Kristina,

I know Dr. Crouch prescribes it for his post laser/IPL patients for 2 weeks as a blood vessel growth inhibitor.

I have read a very interesting article stating that oral azithromycin may be effective for rosacea. I can't link the whole article in the Forum unfortunately but here is the abstract.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17388221?dopt=AbstractPlus

Quote:
Ten adults with acne rosacea were selected to be treated with oral azithromycin. Nine of the 10 subjects received 250 mg 3 times weekly for periods ranging from 5 to 19 weeks.
Nine of 10 subjects treated with azithromycin showed moderate to marked improvement of their acne rosacea. No adverse reactions to azithromycin occurred. and the drug appeared to be safe and effective.

Best wishes,
Melissa

Melissa, is azithromycin the same thing, or a related antiobiotic?

Thanks,
Kristina

Kristina,

It is not the same drug but chemically related and used for similar conditions I believe. Here are 2 links explaining a bit more about it.

I also reacted very badly to the doxy but clarithromycin has always worked fine for me.

Lakan, how did the clarithromycin help with your rosacea? Did it help with redness as well as p&ps?

Thanks,
Kristina

It seems to help me a lot with the swelling part of rosacea and it hopefully also helps some with the underlying inflammation.... It doesn't really do anything with the visible redness nor flushing for me but nothing really does, except IPL's. As for p&p's I don't really know since i don't have any problems with that. I have some regular acne though but it doesn't do anything with that.

But I use clarithromycin mostly beacuse it helps a lot with the swelling and also beacuse it seems to inhibit new blood vessels from forming, so it should be really helpful post IPL's.

Thanks for that info., Lakan - I think it will definitely be worth trying it, then, as I seem to have the same symptoms as you. I'm desperate to start IPL too - unfortunately the clinic I want to go to is booked up for the moment.

Kristina,

Keep calling the IPL clinic every day for a cancellation. If you are persistent you might just get in sooner. There are always cancellations. Call every day and be flexible about it and you might just get what you want! Good luck!

That's a good idea, Melissa. Unfortunately I can't be completely flexible/last minute, as the clinic I really want to go to (Dr Crouch's) is a considerable distance from where I live; and I'd have to make arrangements re. the children etc. But I'd certainly do everything I could to take any appointment they could offer me!

Thanks,
Kristina
