How do you know if you have low stomach acid or too much?

Are there symptoms?

Some have symptoms, some don't. Too much stomach acid can cause heartburn. Too little is "said" to cause indigestion and, for some people, rosacea and other skin problems.

If you want to test it just take a HCl tablet before your next meal and see if your stomach feels comfortable or not. If you feel fine, tahe 2 tablets next meal and so on until you feel uncomfortable. Then you go down 1 step and this is the amount of additional HCl you need.

I just read through that thread and have a question, too...

I know you guys aren't doctors, but just wanted to get your thoughts. A few months ago I had what I thought was reflux or something. I would wake up with terrible indigestion and had trouble eating. After having several tests done, it was determined that I had some "virus" where my stomach wouldn't empty the fat I ate. So, I guess essentially, a digestive issue.

Thinking back on it now, I think the month before the testing, when my PCP had put me on Prilosec, my skin looked pretty good. I am currently taking Zantac 150 (as an H2 blocker), no Prilosec, and my skin is horrible. My doctor didn't put me on meds for my stomach, just told me to follow a low fat diet. I then read somewhere that Zantac can lower HCl. Connection?!

I'm wondering if I should try the HCL (is it I or L?) supplement and see if it helps, but I'm nervous. Any input? Or maybe switch to Pepcid first and see if that helps

Thanks!

~J

**I no longer wake up with stomach pains and I can eat- for the most part- without any problems (still a low-fat diet, though). There was no sign of GERD when I had an endoscopy done.

Hmm.... Very Happy

i have never had heartburn, indigestion, or burping. The only thing I have is coughing and clearing my throat after eating certain foods. Both my children do the same thing! UGH

@Boo.....

Trying HCl is not such a dangerous thing, at least not the way I described. I don't know anything about pepcid except for that it is also an ingredient in most HCl supplements.

Sorry I can't help you really...

@ SD.....

Way to go Angela! Maybe someone else can offer some more input.

Thanks, Angela!!! I think I'm going to start by STOPPING the Zantac and see what that does. Hopefully my allergies are under better control right now and I'll be okay without it. I am also taking an H1 (well, 1 Claritin and 1/2 a Xyzal) so I hope I'll be okay without the H2. I was fine without it before! If not, I'll try the Pepcid and see how that works, and then mabye the HCl. Fingers crossed it helps!
